During the early '90s, Gateway developed some of the first practical, portable computers, most notably, the Handbook. The Washington Post selected the Handbook as the computer of choice for its reporters. The company also developed one of the first industry-standard, Pentium-based notebooks; the first name-brand PC to sell for under $1,000; and the first smart TV, which featured Harmon Kardon surround sound stereo and a 32" screen. The company changed its name from Gateway 2000 to Gateway in 1998, but it continued its innovative ways. From 2002 to 2004, Gateway produced its own lines of wireless internet routers, MP3 players, DLP projectors, digital cameras, and plasma screen TVs that were priced to undercut the competition.
